OpenNebula 5.0 release: now easier to deploy, manage and grow

OpenNebula cloud management system has just released its fifth major version – OpenNebula 5.0.

The new release adds new and improves current features to enable companies build, operate and maintain private and hybrid clouds. OpenNebula now is even easier to deploy, manage and grow. Customers of OpenNebula are companies like: BlackBerry, Unity, Akamai, Runtastic and Fuze, and research and supercomputing centers like Harvard University, FermiLab, LRZ, ESA and SURFsara.

“OpenNebula 5.0 (codename Wizard) includes new features in most of its subsystems. It shows a completely redesigned Sunstone, with a fresh and modern look and new features for large-scale systems. One of the most relevant new features is the new revamped Marketplace, allowing simple image sharing between OpenNebula instances within federated environments. Native support for Virtual Routers to provide routing across isolated virtual networks is also great news in 5.0. VM lifecycle has also been improved, with new operations to ease usage and maintenance, like for instance a new host offline mode and the ability to instantiate a VM to persistent. “- says the OpenNebula team.

“The biggest change in this release is the support of reconfiguration on NIC attach. It uses udev rules to trigger reconfiguration on NIC addition. This reconfigures everything, not only network. Be careful with scripts executed by contextualization.” – they add.

StorPool and OpenNebula have been working together for 2 years. Both solutions are natively integrated which makes building high performance clouds rather simple. The integration between the two systems is performed as a new datastore addon driver in OpenNebula. OpenNebula’s persistent and non-persistent images (virtual disks) are safely stored in a StorPool cluster with the usual high level of reliability and performance. OpenNebula controls and monitors the StorPool cluster. For example, when you create a VM in OpenNebula, it instructs StorPool to create a new volume for the VM disk, which may be based on an ONE template. When an ONE template is being imported it goes directly into the StorPool image data store.

With StorPool, any OpenNebula your public or private cloud gets exceptional storage bandwidth, IOPS and low latency. Combining both products allows for seamless scalability in capacity and performance as well as increased reliability.
